When Women Come to Pray is based in Southern Appalachia, on the ancestral lands of the Anikituwagi, commonly known as the Cherokee, in what is now the city of Asheville, North Carolina. The land on which Asheville sits is known to the Anikituwagi as Togiyasdi, which means “Where They Race,” and was part of the Cherokee Nation of Tsalagi Ayeli.
